Harvest (art work)

This project elaborated through many steps. My initial idea was to make a relation between old and new technologies, and our strong, bloodlike bond with them, however, after spending hours scanning different forms of technology and weird objects, I decided to totally scrap the idea and try something new. Image transfers truly inspired my piece. I was trying to communicate and question the ideas of recycling old items and making new art out of them. I wanted to have a subtle theme of an obsession with upgrades and newest products in the digital age, and the common lack of exploration as to what the costs are for always having the ‘newest’ or ‘latest’ product. Themes of suicide, violence, poor labour conditions, recycling, and nature, are experimented within my piece. Martha Rosler’s “Gray Drape” was also an inspiration to my piece. Elements of dadaism are present in this piece.

My subject matter is a mixture of eerie, political, and the abstract. The objects I used were scans of old newspapers/magazines, scanning of 3D object such as my arm and leg, scans of transparencies that I found in the garbage, cut out materials such as photos and printed materials, macro photography of 3D objects, a lot of Photoshop layering and masking, appropriated online images, and image transfers. I worked with both human and non-human subjects. I was interested in meshing as many approaches as possible in order to add to the layers and complex/experimental aspects of my work.
